How to Develop a Meaningful & Inspiring Art Collection

Coming from a background in the art world, I am always thrilled when asked to help curate meaningful artwork for a client’s home. Whether it’s an enthralling window to the past, a happy reminder of a memory, or a textural piece that invites cozy vibes, art has a transformative effect on the mind...as well as your home. But the secret? Knowing how to curate a collection.

If you don’t know your Monets from your Manets…don’t worry. Today, I’ll be your guide to all things art. Plus, I’ll share some fun deets about our brand-new art consulting service. (Yasss!!)

But first, let’s take a minute to understand the basics. You might be surprised at what you find out…

What is Considered “Art”?

Nope, it’s not just original paintings and photography (although I LOVE both). Art can be described as anything you can display that evokes emotion. Hand-carved wooden bowl? Art. Unique sculpture made from coconut shells? Art. Musical instruments strategically hung on the wall? You know what I’m going to say.

Most importantly, any artwork that you select for your home should give you allll the feels. So, where can you find these special pieces? Here’s a great starting point…

  • Travels. Whether it’s a cozy, handmade throw from a trip to Barcelona or a stylish set of vessels from a weekend in Sedona, these items will not only beautify your home but remind you of your fondest memories. Win, win.

  • Local Artisans. Support your favorite local artists by exploring galleries, pop-up events, and their social media accounts. Having a piece with a story behind it or a face to go with the name can add depth to your walls.

  • Antique Shops. When popping into an antique shop or flea market, you’re guaranteed to find a treasure or two (with a matching story to tell). I personally love the “old meets new” vibe that antiques can bring into modern spaces.

  • Family & Friends. Do you have a talented friend or family member? By all means, use them to source your artwork! You’re guaranteed to be super connected to the pieces because of your personal relationships with their makers.

  • Installations. Have you ever considered an installation in your home? It’s a stunning way to support a local artist and get a one-of-a-kind creation, made for you and your style.

We commissioned the super talented Christina Watka for this stunning piece in our client’s home!

How to Display Art in Your Home

Tip #1. Consider Your Space

It’s very important to understand the relationship between the scale of the art and the space. That’s why your first step is to look at your furniture layout and identify any area where you’d like to feature art. For example…

Is there a large blank wall above your neutral sofa? Consider a large statement piece to make the room pop. Are you coordinating several works of art in the same room? Use varying sizes, and make sure the height alignment stays consistent for a cohesive and intentional space.

Tip #2. Mix and Match Mediums

You don’t have to stick to only framed photos and paintings. Art is a great opportunity to bring some texture into your space, so take advantage! Consider mixing and matching mediums for a perfect balance. Textiles like woven wall hangings and artisan-made baskets can add a sense of warmth, while unique sculptures can infuse personality and set the mood.

Tip #3. Find the Proper Placement

This is an important one that many people forget about. Be sure to consider the sight lines of a piece from all angles. Can you see it from other rooms? Does it change how you relate to it when you catch a glimpse from a different perspective? And most importantly, is it constantly in direct sun or displayed near moisture? All of this can affect longevity, so it’s best to consider each of these before putting a hole in the wall.

Tip #4. Consider Your Color Palette

Let’s say you have a chic color story going on in your home. Shouldn’t the artwork you choose complement it? Totally. Take a thoughtful look at your space and decide what would feel right with your vibe. For example, maybe your neutral living room would benefit from a pop of bold color. Or, maybe you’re in love with the soothing, chic blue tones of your bedroom and want to emphasize it with something equally calming. You be the judge.

This original painting perfectly coordinates with the mostly neutral yet slightly bohemian color palette in our ADU. It reminds me of a rainbow sherbet sunset on a landscape…exactly where I’d like to be right about now.

Tip #5. Make It Meaningful

The art you select for your home should be inspiring, meaningful, and relatable on a personal level. There’s no point in hanging a piece that makes you feel nothing, am I right? (That’s called “hotel art.”) Whether it’s an heirloom painting or a photograph of a favorite place, you’ll know it’s right when it resonates with you.

While not completely necessary, playing with themes can also be super fun. Ceramic sculptures of an adorbs little animal wearing a crown? Perfect for the kiddos’ room. And keep in mind that not all art comes from a fancy gallery. You might just have some budding artists living under your roof. ;)
